Dyslexia Information
All students Grades K-2 are required to be screened for risk of the characteristics of a specific learning disability of Dyslexia (in reading), (according to Senate Enrolled Act No. 217).  Early identification of students “at some risk” or “at risk” for dyslexia is critical for the development of early and appropriate interventions to support the student before they begin to fall behind their peers.  Universal screeners (DIBELS) will be used for all K-2 students to help identify concerns.  Screenings will be in the following areas:

  1.  Phonological and phonemic awareness;

  2. Sound symbol recognition;

  3. Alphabet knowledge;

  4. Decoding skills;

  5. Rapid naming; and

  6. Encoding skills

Parents will receive a letter if their child needs further Level 1 screening.  To read more about this new Dyslexia law, please visit the Indiana Department of Education website at:  https://www.in.gov/doe/students/indiana-academic-standards/literacy/dyslexia/.
